The University Board elections are ongoing and we encourage you all to vote! The board is the highest ranking decision making body at UiB and most aspects of working as a PhD (or similar position) are in some way influenced by it. We vote for who will represent us temporary academic staff on the board. We strongly encourage you to vote as the elected candidate has a lot of influence. An introduction to each of the candidates is given below.

Candidates:
Candidate Erik Hanson
I am:
– a person who poses the critical questions.
– up to date on matters relating both faculties and the university.
– used to think of the university as a whole.
– open for input from colleagues on the entire UiB.
We must:
– ensure that UiB maintain its broad profile.
– facilitate good career paths for PhD candidates and postdocs.
– remind lecturers and supervisors that their position of power can be the basis for harassment and unwanted attention.
– carefully monitor the processes initiated at UiB and by the government on management models.
– make the university democracy real and vibrant.
Rector and the university director are getting too comfortable. Decisions and processes are run too fast and with too little anchoring among students and employees. The most important task for the university board is to monitor and control the rector and to ensure transparent processes. Those who are easiest to run over are the temporary employees in Group B. I will make sure that does not happen.

Candidate Sofie Marhuag
My main motivation for running for the university council, is that I want to work against organizing the university using a business model. I think it especially important that the universities strive to keep a minimum of democratic oversight—to which today’s system contributes—and to advocate for giving elected representatives more influence than today.
The current model is under threat. The conservative and libertarian parties in government (H, FrP & V) have stated in their policy platform that they want to “initiate a feasibility study looking into different organizational structures for higher education, for instance the business model.” Higher education is a place of knowledge and learning and should both benefit and challenge society at large. The university can therefore not make itself dependent on private financial interests and should not be founded on commercial principles. Universities are already dependent on teaching and publication points for funding, and the university’s autonomy in defining research questions may be additionally pressured if the university is assigned a purely client-supplier relationship to the state.
I fear that more of a business mentality in higher education will threaten academic freedom, and in the university council I want to be a clear voice against the business model.
Candidate Anesa Mulabecirovic
I am running for election as a representative for temporary academic staff because I want the voices of our group to be heard, our opnions to be expressed and our concerns to be adressed as a part of UoBs agenda.
As both a PhD-Candidate and a temporary employee for the past five years at UoB and HUH, I have experienced the issues that affect us all and require attention, action, and imminent solutions. I am devoted to assure that the terms of employment are improved and respected for temporary staff. This includes improving the framework for supervision, specifying that compulsory labor is relevant and career promoting, as well as assuring a tidy and fair hiring processes.
Being a representative for group B implies that one represents an inhomogenous group. However, we are a group that has a common ground; we are all temporary employed and make out approximately 25% of the UoB staff. If I am elected, I will be a clear voice and loyal representative to ensure that we have a democtratic UiB that does not discriminate and assures a virtous work place for us that are temporarly staffed and promotes further career possibilities.
If you choose to vote for me, you will vote for a strong voice with a honest heart and a genuine committment to represent all temporary academic staff at UoB.
